Sambar is cooked not only by South Indians but all Indians. It is so popular that you can get it anywhere in India. We have made South Indian homemade sambar recipe which is not not sweet. In few places you will find it sweet sambar because they add sugar or jaggery. I have made this with basic ingredients which you will find easily at your home and the taste will be awesome.

Ingredients for Sambar
Toor dal 1 cup
Sambar powder ( I used MTR powder)
Turmeric powder 1 tsp
2 small onions roughly chopped
Red chilly powder
Method to make sambar
1- Cook toor dal with little turmeric and salt in a pressure cooker for 3-4 whistles
2- Heat a pan and add oil.
3- Add mustard seeds,curry leaves and asofetida. Let it crackle nicely.
4- Add onions and cook until soft.
5- Add chopped drumsticks and cook for 7-8 minutes.
6- Add tomatoes.
7- Add salt , turmeric powder and sambar powder. Mix it all together.
8- Add 2 cups water, cover with a lid and cook the vegetables for 6-7 minutes on a medium flame.
9- Add cooked toor dal and mix it all togther.
10- Add water( i added 150 ml water) as required and add tamarind pulp.
11- Cover with lid and let it cook for 10- 15 minutes on a low flame.
13- Serve it hot with Rice and Ghee.
